Service Description
This one day course (9.30am till around 5.30pm) training, practical assessments and confirms competency to manage/supervise Volunteers and Contractors. Aim’s of the course: To be able to understand an inspection sheet. Set up on remedial action on cycle / MTB trails and record the finding appropriately. Safely supervise a group of Trail workers and Volunteers. Terrain used: A selection of grades of off road cycle trails. Course prerequisite: Participants should have some experience of working ‘outdoors’ and have a basic understanding of mountain biking trails and their maintenance. Key sections covered on this course include: • Plan, lead and Supervise a dig day. • Have an overview of cycle trail construction and remedial actions. • Developing a safe system of work for cycle trail maintenance sites. • Develop an understanding of the Trail Inspection process. Will be given a Works Supervisors Managing Mountain Bike Trails Book, which also has all the relevant Wellbeing, Health and Safety information in it. Through studying the work book and participating in the practical sessions participants will cover the following topics: • Construction Design Management compliance • Risk Assessment • Method Statement • Emergency Plan • Accident and near miss reporting • Lone working • Welfare • On site safety • First aid • Biosecurity • Permissions • Work planning / scheduling • Managing live trails • Diversions and trail closures • Sign up an data management • Teaching techniques • Volunteers using hand tools • Manual handling • Tools and tool care • Faults and fixes • Drainage • Surfacing • Structures • Sight line management Updated for 2025 with the latest thinking from the Visitor Safety in the Countryside Group (VSCG) regarding members of the public Risk Assessments and frequency of inspections. We are also accredited by Association of Trail Builders (ATB) as delivery partners and Dirtt Tutors.. After the course there is a online test to complete, which you can sit down with a cuppa and the course books to go through. If you have no trail building or mountain biking experience, we would advise you to do one of our Maintenance Courses or join a Volunteer group to build up the knowledge and hands on expertise.
